Representatives of Sweden and Finland will visit Turkey to discuss NATO membership

Head of the Turkish parliament, Mustafa Sentop, announced that representatives of the parliaments of Sweden and Finland will visit the republic in January to discuss issues related to joining NATO, TASS reports.

According to the speaker of the Turkish parliament, Sweden and Finland made a number of promises to Turkey that must be kept. He stressed that the two European countries are “positive and determined” and indicated that their goal is to join the North Atlantic Alliance to strengthen national security.

“We need to believe in it, for this they need to take concrete steps. In the light of this, Turkey will make a decision on the issue of NATO membership of Sweden and Finland,” Sentop said.

Earlier, US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken announced the readiness of Finland and Sweden to become NATO members. At the same time, not all countries agree to ratify the treaty with countries – so far Hungary and Turkey have refused. Ankara accuses Finland and Sweden of aiding terrorists.

In June, both countries signed a memorandum with Turkey containing the conditions that the Scandinavian countries must fulfill in order to join NATO. In particular, Stockholm and Helsinki agreed to full cooperation with Turkey in the fight against the PKK and its structures.
