At least 15 Armenian troops killed in barracks fire, 2nd Army Corps Commander fired

15 troops were killed and 3 others injured in a fire which broke out in the barracks of an engineering-sapper company of the Armenian Armed Forces on January 19, the Ministry of Defense said. The ministry said the death toll is preliminary and that the three injured troops are in severe condition, 1lurer reports.

The fire broke out around 01:30, January 19 in the barracks located in Azat village, Gegharkunik province. Authorities said the cause of the fire is yet to be determined.  
Commander of the 2nd Army Corps Major-General Vahram Grigoryan was relieved of duties.
President Vahagn Khachaturyan signed the decree on dismissing the major-general, Khachatryan’s office said. The motion to sack Major-General Grigoryan was submitted by Prime Minister Pashinyan.
The 2nd Army Corps is headquartered in Gegharkunik, the province where a fire in a military barracks killed 15 troops on January 19.  
Major-General Grigoryan was commanding the 2nd Army Coprs since 2021.
