Guterres calls for immediate humanitarian ceasefire in Gaza
United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Sunday once again called for a humanitarian ceasefire in response to the increasing number of deaths in Gaza, IP reports.
Amid the ongoing war between Israel and Hamas, United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has reiterated his call for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire.
"I am deeply shocked that two UNRWA (United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East) schools were struck in less than 24 hours in Gaza. Dozens of people, many women and children, were killed and injured as they were seeking safety in United Nations premises," the secretary-general said.
Top UN officials echoed that call to improve conditions for Gaza’s 2.3 million people, 1.7 million of which have been displaced since the 7 October Hamas attack in Israel resulted in the killing of 1,200 Israelis and the capture of 240 hostages. Since then, more than 12,000 people have been killed in besieged Gaza.
The UN Geneva issued a statement by 'Principals of the Inter-Agency Standing Committee on the situation in Israel and the Occupied Palestinian Territory'.
Heads of 18 UN agencies and NGOs issued a joint statement on Gaza, saying: "We need an immediate humanitarian ceasefire. Enough is enough. This must stop now.
