Unclear whether Azerbaijan committed to signing peace treaty with Armenia on basis of three principles – PM Pashinyan

At the moment is not clear whether Azerbaijan reiterates its commitments to sign a peace treaty on the basis of three principles, Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said at a press conference today, Armradio reports.

He reminded that the three principles have been agreed upon during negotiations, and that agreement was actually reflected in the results of the trilateral meetings between the leaders of Armenia and Azerbaijan and the President of the EU Council on May 14 and July 15.

“The first principle is that Armenia and Azerbaijan recognize each other’s territorial integrity based on the understanding that Armenia’s territory covers 29.800 km2 and Azerbaijan’s 86.600 km2. The second principle is that the Alma-Ata declaration should be the political basis for delimitation,” PM Pashinyan said.

He noted that under the Declaration Armenia and Azerbaijan have confirmed that they recognize each other’s territorial integrity, inviolability of borders and sovereignty. The Prime Minister added that the 1974-1990 maps of the General Staff of the USSR Armed Forces should be the basis of delimitation.

“The third principle is that the regional communications should be unblocked on the basis of the principles of equality, sovereignty and reciprocity,” the Prime Minister said.

He stressed that it’s not certain whether Azerbaijan refuses to sign a peace treaty on the basis of the above principles.

“At the same time we cannot be confident that Azerbaijan reiterates its commitment to the principles, and it is necessary to clarify these issues and nuances through negotiations,” PM Pashinyan stated.
